Single and Double - Best Boats !!

Would love to know what you guys think the best boat for 1 up and 2 up would be, whats the fastest on the water in this configuration, who's making the best boat these days ?

Can't be a A class, i break them :)

Just interested in your thoughts.

Money not being an option,

I was going to purchase an Infusion and i no Nacra has a real nice MKII on the floor...real nice 

but crews always a problem, people living very busy lives so Infusion i think will have to sit on the bench until i find someone that likes sailing as much as me. 

Thanks for any thoughts.

The F16 is purpose built for downwind and is a lot better than a 4.9 downwind, it was developed by a guy called Wouter in Europe who home built a Taipan 4.9 then put wider beams on it, from there the F16's evolved with bigger hulls that have a lot more buoyancy so can carry more weight, a bigger rig etc they are distinctly different and suited to the courses sailed.

In Australia anyway i think it makes sense to try and sail the boat that also suits your state and what your clubs sailing, Here in Qld thats Hobie & Nacra .......  It's only a matter of time and we'll have another dealer in QLD.

All very interesting points! While neither come close to the Calypso 16, it seems like although the Viper has gained the popularity it's perhaps not so special. I guess to an extent as discussed before, it's a business thing, if you make a new product people will buy it, they could have just kept the taipan exactly the same and called it a viper and people probably would have bought a stack of them.

I think the 4.9 is much better than the Viper in fact the 4.9 would probably be the most versatile boat I have seen. If I wasn't so fat and didn't have crew I would have one. You can easily handle the boat one up, it is much lighter than the Viper, can have 1 up with or without spin, 2 up with or without spin, pick your day put what sails you want on, the handicap is already worked out. IMO the only reason the Viper is popular is the Olympic course that a lot of clubs sail now is windward return with no reach. The Viper has a lot more buoyancy up forward so is faster downwind but is not in the 4.9's class on a reach, IMO the Taipans started killing demand when they went to windward returns as the F16's & F18's are better suited. The F16's being a heavy boat have an advantage in manufacturing anybody can build a heavy boat it takes an artist like Boyer to build a light boat but that makes the hulls more expensive than a Viper while the market says the 4.9 should be cheaper. I would fully expect a F16 built in China to be within the weight range but Goodall proved the Chinese can't build a 4.9

The Vipers aren't better than a 4.9, they are different! Quicker round the track, yes. Probably comparable on yardstick? Vipers are bigger volume, heavier and more powered up (mainly because of kite). Most sail 2 up. Fleet sizes are limited but slowly on the rise (and hot fleet at nationals). Second hand boat prices are still up there.

4.9s are a bit more agile and efficient, lighter and quicker to rig and move, especially with one person. Shy reaching is probably nicer on a 4.9 especially sloop, as the vipers are designed for up and down sailing. More second hand boats and parts.

I would be happy with either boat, but I cant see enough advantages to swap to a Viper yet

Good question Robbie, I think the 4.9's a great boat and still available at a fantastic price, i saw one last week up north for 3,500..condition looked great. If u got the dollars you might want a Viper and then again you might want to shout yourself a trip around the world and come home to your 4.9 and still have heaps of fun. We got one up here on the gold coat that i know off and it's been sitting in a shed for the better part of 18 months.. Qld is probably not the place to have a Viper if you want to actively race against other Vipers as we have such low numbers. But if you just want to have fun, i suppose it wouldn't matter were you were, Down south there pretty much a number one choice.

Your right Luke, at the end of the day it's all business, and from what i was reading last night Australia's not looking to good at the moment money wise. But on a note about taipans, i was looking at Mt Martha Club, what a location to sail :) and the club was packed with Taipans, was good to see so many. 

You really don't want to build boats Robbie, i've had a bit to do with fibre glass and resin and lets just say, it's not a good full time job... This is best left to the guy's that have been doing it for years.

I do no a guy up here selling brand new Mossie Cat Hulls at very reasonable prices if ever anyone needs some...i did post some pictures on the site somewhere, there all foam sandwich and look great.

I would imagine the moulds will always belong to Greg, and the association will work closely with him to subby out the work and make sure the moulds are kept in good cond
